Community engagement

Community Engagement is happening NOW! The FHMP Project of reimagining of Harvey Milk Plaza is a multifaceted project that includes leadership and collaboration with the community and SF agencies working to address the burgeoning population growth across the city which has directly impacted the Castro Muni Metro Station and Harvey Milk Plaza. Transit, urban planning and safety are critical elements incorporated into this process. As with any project in its early stages, substantial changes to the design are expected based on more public feedback, technical, and engineering concerns.

The FHMP Project is collaborating with SFMTA who have announced Harvey Milk Plaza Accessibility Improvements project at the same location, intended to address non-compliant ADA conditions at the Castro Muni Metro Station to comply with regulations that were not in effect when the station debuted in 1980. The SFMTA scope of work includes an elevator that will provide access to/from the street, concourse/ticketing, and platform levels of the station. Also included are improvements to the accessible path between the new elevator and the existing path of travel. Acknowledging the significance of Harvey Milk Plaza, SFMTA reached out to local community organizations inviting an opportunity to leverage the SFMTA project with the community interest in commemorating Harvey Milk, for whom the plaza was named. Scheduling the reimagining of Harvey Milk Plaza project in tandem with the city’s accessibility construction is expected to greatly reduce the expense. A robust fundraising effort is being planned to raise private funds for the FHMP Project. Although the FHMP Project and the SFMTA Accessibility Project are collaborative projects at the same site and naturally are in communication, planning is independent of one another. Throughout the process, opportunities for efficiency are being identified and leveraged as much as possible.

Beginning in January 2018, FHMP will hold public meetings at various stages of design development, see our EVENTS page for scheduled events. FHMP understands that community input is critical. Community engagement opportunities to share feedback, input, and ideas ensure this is a welcome and successful project in our beloved community. We encourage anyone interested to please add your email to our distribution list to keep abreast of these community engagement opportunities and STAY INFORMED! In addition, SFMTA hosted two open houses for the Castro Station Accessibility Improvements Project on March 5th and 12th, 2018.

As of November 2017

In November 2017, FHMP and Perkins Eastman began meeting to process information gathered and learned during the competition, and to continue development of the design proposal. The 3 design team finalists produced renderings for Harvey Milk Plaza as part of the design competition. The community, technical advisors, jurors, city agencies and FHMP contributed a vast breadth of input and feedback on the designs proposed and ultimately influenced the team selected to win the overall competition. The competition resulted in identifying the design team who will begin the design process taking into consideration these proposed big ideas from the 33 entrants, as well as new and alternative ideas. This process will continue to engage and interact with the community, city planning and public works experts, engineering expertise, art and historical influences, and a plethora of individuals and organizations to assist in this community centric project.
